Carol Southerland…

As long as I can remember, I've always wanted to work with clay. Retirement has provided me with just such an opportunity!  I was totally "hooked" after my first day in class! I am a work in progress; enjoying both the wheel, hand-building, and sculpting in the fifth year of my journey.

As a former Master Gardener, I incorporate my love of nature and gardening into my art, using native trees and flowers such as Magnolias, Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush and Dogwoods, many of which adorn my crosses. I try to capture the beauty and fragile quality of flowers and I usually include them in my work.

Of all the things I make, I LOVE, making my crosses! Making them gives me a special sense of comfort and peace, especially in the wee hours of the morning or at night. I thank the Lord everyday for re-purposing my soul and helping me to create organic, unstructured pieces; some of which are functional, like my bowls and platters, while other pieces, such as my crosses and ceramic floral arrangements are purely decorative.
